The Jazz June-Breakdance Suburbia (1999)
I found The Jazz June a while back after stumbling upon links for a majority of the early Emo Diaries compilations. After a momentary mixup with Jejune, my search ended with a few of their studio releases. This album is a great example of what happens when Midwest emo makes its way up to Philadelphia about 8-10 years before we started to see the current revival scene from the likes of Street Smart Cyclist, Algernon, etc. What this album borrows from bands like The Promise Ring by means of lyrical structure, it makes up for with heavier guitars lines and bitter cynicism. The true home run here is Antiquated, lodged dead center in the album’s lineup:
you’re an impostor
my hands are tied
the writer’s fallen memory
well it lied
There’s not a lot more to say about this album. The Jazz June are just simply a good, straightforward emo band with talented members and lyrics that don’t sugarcoat nostalgia. By no means the best album from the time, but certainly a good listen.

Fuck I should do another one too. This is a pretty good record. Maybe I’ll do Knapsack, if nothing more than so you have...
